News: AFP: China lacks moral authority to be a superpower: Dalai Lama

http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5jgoTvYHevio-87gjKEykQplCqaDA

This is sooo right!!!

BRUSSELS (AFP) — China lacks the moral authority, including over the question of Tibet, to be a true superpower, the Dalai Lama said Thursday during a European tour that has angered Beijing.

After addressing the EU parliament in Brussels, the Tibetan spiritual leader said China "deserves to be a superpower" given its huge population and economic and military strength.

"Now one important factor is moral authority and that is lacking," he told a press conference in Brussels.

"Because of its very poor record on human rights and religious freedom and freedom of expression and freedom of the press -- too much censorship -- the image of China in the field of moral authority is very, very poor," he said.

"The sensible Chinese realize China should now pay more attention in this field in order to get more respect from the rest of the world," the Nobel peace laureate said.

He cited the problems of Tibet and separatist factions in the southwestern Chinese province of Xinjiang as areas where such a moral authority should be displayed. He also named Hong Kong and reunification with Taiwan.

He said he continued to have confidence in the Chinese people while doubting the government wanted serious talks on Tibet's future.

Earlier, the Dalai Lama addressed the European Parliament during his second day in the Belgian capital, where he was greeted by loud applause.

Some MEPs even displayed a Tibetan flag.

The chamber's president, Hans-Gert Poettering, assured that the parliament would "continue to defend the rights of the Tibetan people to their cultural and religious identity."

He called on Chinese leaders to hold meaningful talks with representatives of the exiled Dalai Lama.

On Saturday, the Dalai Lama will meet in Poland with French President Nicolas Sarkozy, whose country holds the EU's rotating presidency.

That meeting has particularly angered Beijing and the Chinese government has taken the unprecedented decision to call off an EU summit which was due to be held in France this week.

Beijing objects to foreign leaders meeting with the Dalai Lama, who it maintains is trying to win independence for his Himalayan homeland that has been under Chinese rule since 1951.

The Buddhist leader, who insists he only wants meaningful autonomy for Tibet under Chinese rule, and other Nobel Peace Prize laureates were invited to Gdansk to celebrate the 25 years since Poland's Lech Walesa won the award.

The Dalai Lama, who lives in exile in India, has sought "meaningful autonomy" for Tibet since he fled his homeland following a failed uprising in 1959 against Chinese rule, nine years after Chinese troops invaded the region.

China claims he actually seeks full independence.

"We are not 'splittists', but the Chinese government still accuses us of being 'splittists'," he said.

Lucia's note #3

It might be an illusion.
But I know that aint deception.

I feel so content and satisfied beside him. This feeling is incredible.
He let me be whatever i want to be. that is f*king awesome!

I was just sitting writing next to him, typing my notes and feeling.

"GOOD".

Cuz I got him with me, and we're both positively working on our things.

Just one episode of our story tonight, so I took him to this "Orient express" restaurant tonight, it was a Vietnamese/Chinese/Cantonese restaurant...(so I guess you probably get the idea that is a place basically you can get everything that's "oriental"!)

At the end of the dinner, he show me the note he got from the fortune cookies..
It's something like...

"Stop searching, your happiness is right next to you"

(and we're joking about how he thinks it's kinda silly for some couples actually like to sit on the same side...but we're still doing that, haha. of course, at my request! :p)

so what was mine??

"The heart knows better than the intellectual"

Anyways, I thought it is just cute to actually have him have the note.

For a monday night, April, 28th.

Lucia's note:
What was I saying to him last night?
I really can't recall that well anymore...so before it completely fades away from my short term temporary memory, I wanna make a note for myself.

Albeit another night for sleep deficit, i had such a good time and am feeling energized just by reconstructing it now.

I think I started by saying something like...."I have something I wanna say to you, I have the vocab in French, Spanish, Chinese, and Taiwanese, but none of them are foreign enough to (say to) you..."

You seemed persistent, wanted to dig out the answer from me.

Undecided, I continued....."I wish I know how to say it, even just in Arabic....."

(Why would "foreignness" become a problem? since when?? I was trying to figure that out with myself later when I thought of the way how I phrase it...)

Hesitated, not sure of the consequence of dropping the bomb when everything is still so new, still burgeoning at the same time, I let the silence set in to fill up the space.

For a while, breaking the space, u said, "I have the same feelings. I wish I know something that's foreign enough ...."
(your answer is incomplete, I might have to construct your answers again sometime from you....but I don't think I can figure out a way to ask you more implicitly..)

But I like ur reply the best. :) <3

----------------------------------------------

Later on......

After a while, I broke the silence..."I just remembered that I also know how to say that in Japanese and Korean...."

Being amused, or half believing, you encouraged me to try out my answers...

Thinking there might be a 50/50 chance for me that you still don't know my answer afterwards,
I swiftly thrown out my answers in Japanese and Korean and secretly hoped that you don't know either of them at all. Turning my back, leaning toward you, comfortably and securely enjoying staying in ur hug, sharing your warmth. I was glad that the darkness could cover my smiles which might appear to be foolish at then.

Gosh, I was superbly content.

Let it be true...or not....

Your belly fat could be making you hungrier

Researchers in London, Canada identify new source of appetite stimulant

Original source: http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2008-04/uowo-ybf041608.php

The extra fat we carry around our middle could be making us hungrier, so we eat more, which in turn leads to even more belly fat. Dr. Kaiping Yang and his colleagues at the Lawson Health Research Institute affiliated with The University of Western Ontario found abdominal fat tissue can produce a hormone that stimulates fat cell production. The researchers hope this discovery will change in the way we think about and treat abdominal obesity.

Yang identified that the hormone Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is produced by abdominal fat tissue. Previously, it was believed to only be produced by the brain. Yang believes this novel finding may lead to new therapeutic targets for combating obesity. Their findings were reported in a recent issue of The FASEB Journal.

The traditional view is that one of the main reasons why overweight people eat more food is because their brains produce the hormone NPY in excessive amounts. NPY is the most potent appetite stimulating hormone known, sending signals to the individual that they are constantly hungry. However, Yang, a Professor in the Departments of Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Physiology & Pharmacology at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at The University of Western Ontario, has provided evidence that in obese rat models NPY is also produced locally by abdominal fat.

A fat cell cannot replicate itself. But the researchers found NPY increases fat cell number by stimulating the replication of fat cell precursor cells, which then change into fat cells.

Yang says “this may lead to a vicious cycle where NPY produced in the brain causes you to eat more and therefore gain more fat around your middle, and then that fat produces more NYP hormone which leads to even more fat cells.”

Being overweight, regardless of where the fat is located, is unhealthy. However, because of its anatomical location and its byproducts, abdominal fat or the apple-shape is known to be the most dangerous. People predisposed to the apple shape are at an elevated risk for heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and some cancers.

Next, the researchers will be investigating whether NPY produced by fat is released into the body’s circulatory system. “We want to know if NPY could potentially be transported in the blood to the brain where it in turn has an impact on the brain to stimulate feelings of hunger,” says Yang. If the researchers find that NPY is in fact transported in the blood circulation then it may be possible to develop a simple blood test to detect increased levels of NPY. “If you can detect NPY early and identify those at risk for abdominal obesity we can then target therapy to turn off NPY. It would be much easier to use drugs to prevent obesity than to treat the diseases caused by obesity.”

Japan is a market pioneer again: the first industrialised nation with no butter

An explosion in grain prices and a slide away from self-sufficiency is causing global crisis. And wealth is no guarantee of insulation

The manager of the Z-one supermarket, five minutes from Prada’s flagship store and in the heart of Tokyo’s chicest residential area, shrugs her shoulders and suggests margarine.

Japan, she says apologetically, has nearly exhausted its butter reserves. When the shop will next have any, she whispers, is anybody’s guess.

Even as the elderly shopkeeper explains the acute national butter shortage, she can barely believe her own words: Japanese farmers who once scoffed at the low prices of imported cattle feed have been crippled by the global rise in grain prices.

And a rich country that has not gone without anything it wanted on its plate for 35 years is suddenly panicking about food security.

Decades of urbanisation, complacency about food, burgeoning imports and dwindling self-sufficiency were once proud boasts. Suddenly, they look like liabilities. Japan, say analysts, is emerging as a useful proxy for what the food crisis could mean for developed economies because it has gone further down the road of reliance on global food markets — markets that now threaten to deliver turmoil.

To developing Asia — China and India particularly — Japan’s history of industrialisation offers solid clues about what will happen to food demand as meat-eating middle classes spring from an expanding economy. Chinese eat twice as much meat — 50kg (110lb) per year — as they did in the 1980s. Japan made that leap half a century ago.

For other developed nations, Japan’s reaction to global food shortages will illustrate what happens to a country whose population has far outgrown its farmland’s ability to support, whose agricultural population is elderly and disaffected, whose food self-sufficency rates are low, but whose palates have grown accustomed to exotic imports.

It has also demonstrated that the pressures driving world food prices higher can hit large, consolidated industries as hard as small Thai or Haitian farmers.

Once-reliable assumptions, such as that Japan was the export destination of choice for many food-producing countries, have evaporated in a new reality of ferocious competition between buyers.

More shocking than the — probably fairly brief — butter shortages is the speed with which catastrophe has struck an institution so old and well organised as the Japanese dairy industry. Just two years ago, Japan’s spring milk glut was so embarrassing that 1,000 tonnes were poured down the drain and farmers were forced to stand outside railway stations in Hokkaido handing out free cartons to passers-by.

Some dairies looked into ways to convert milk into burnable natural gas, there was simply so much of the white stuff.

Since then, Australian milk imports have fallen because of the country’s three-year drought and feed is much more expensive because grain prices have soared across the world.

Wealthy Japan faces low risk of starvation, food rioting or any of the associated social unrest which threaten much of the developing world. Japan’s people can absorb food price rises for the time being.

But Japan’s butter shortages have exposed an alarming effect of what economists at Goldman Sachs describe as the long-term, “structural” shift towards higher food prices currently being felt: that many of the existing arrangements crafted by wealthier nations to feed their populations are now in peril.

Japan, its leading food importers say, will inevitably take a step backwards in the food it eats. “The time will come,” says Akio Shibata, the director of the Marubeni Institute and one of Japan’s foremost experts on food supply, “when the Japanese people will realise that they will not have the quality, taste and prices of food they are used to.”

At the root of the problem, not just for Japan, is the historic diminution of the world’s wheat and corn inventories. It is a situation, says Michael Lewis, head of commodities research at Deutsche Bank, which “shows how precarious a system can become when inventories get low and the sensitivity to price spikes explodes”.

With only a month’s worth of corn and wheat inventories remaining, the world’s food system has lost its cushion. And wealth does not guarantee insulation.

So even as Tokyo’s restaurants celebrate their world-beating haul of Michelin stars, a government survey found last week that 40 per cent of Japanese are dismayed by a deterioration in the quality of their food.

Takashi Hagemura is not surprised. Where once the world was a buyer’s market for a strong yen, Japan has fallen victim, says the owner of the Ren noodle restaurant in Shibuya, to movements in global food markets over which it no longer has any real control. China’s growing middle class has developed a taste for coffee that has created a demand on a scale that the old market was barely prepared for.

Vietnamese farmers, quick to spot a cash crop that they could readily produce in bulk, diverted their activities to coffee growing and, inadvertently, slashed their exports of the pepper that used to be grown on the same land. Pepper prices, as charged to noodle restaurants in Tokyo, have surged by nearly 80 per cent and, desperate to keep his prices competitive, Mr Hagemura now, regretfully, puts less into his noodle soup.

[Fwd]: China Demographic Crisis: Too Many Boys, Elderly

A news to share from NPR World

China Demographic Crisis: Too Many Boys, Elderly

Morning Edition, April 14, 2008 · It has been three decades since China's one-child policy was introduced as a temporary measure to slow the country's population growth. But there's rising opposition to the policy amid criticism that it's creating another demographic crisis.

The trends are exemplified in the city of Shanghai, which has the lowest birth rate and the highest proportion of seniors in China.

As two-year-old Maomao and her 10-month-old brother Lulu play in a Shanghai park, little do they realize they're a departure from three decades of strict family planning. Although many rural Chinese have two children, China still limits most urban families to just one child.

Because Maomao and Lulu's parents are both only-children themselves, they're among the privileged few city dwellers allowed to have two kids.

"I was lonely as a child," says their mother Zara, who didn't want her full name to be used. "I was jealous of friends who had brothers and sisters. Now my friends are envious of my two children."

Figures bear this out: A poll last year showed 69 percent of Chinese would support a proposal to abolish the one-child policy.

Zara has come to the park with her mother-in-law, and her 81-one-year-old mother-in-law. All of them support China's efforts to control its population.

"Our leaders have thought a lot about the country's policies," the 81-year-old matriarch says. "Whatever they say is right."

'Abnormal' Sex Ratio at Birth

However, demographic scholars aren't so sure. Some academics now believe the simplistic thinking behind the one-child policy could be responsible for a looming demographic crisis.

Among them is Peng Xizhe, dean of social development and public policy at Fudan University.

"The major policymakers are only concerned about the total number of the population," he says. "But now China's population dynamic has become so complicated. On the one hand, the number is still growing. Then we have the very rapidly aging population. Then we have the issues of big migration. And also we face the problem of the abnormal sex ratio at birth."

That abnormal sex ratio means little Lulu might not find a wife, along with as many as 40 million other young men. The latest figures show 119 baby boys are born in China for every 100 girls — far above the normal ratio of between 103 and 107 boys per 100 girls — because of the traditional preference for boys and the availability of abortion.

Economic Consequences

The strict birth control policies have serious economic consequences too.

China's limited labor pool and its aging population means it will eventually lose its position as workshop of the world, says Zuo Xuejin, executive vice president of Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences. He says the demographic trend is making China less competitive in labor-intensive manufacturing than India, Bangladesh and other countries.

Indeed the future of the one-child policy was a hot topic at this year's session of China's parliament. But speculation that changes might be in the offing ended when Population Minister Zhang Weiqing said the policy would stay in place for another decade.

The academics say that's a mistake.

"It's better to just let families decide how many children they want," Peng Xizhe says.

Zuo Xuejin, of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, says fertility "is a very basic right of citizens" that should not be interfered with.

One reason why they believe people should take control of their own fertility is China's rapidly aging elderly population.

'No One Will Take Care of Me'

In the Shanghai park, seniors far outnumber children; a staggering 20 percent of the city's population is older than 60. Longer life expectancy and the one-child policy mean fewer workers are supporting ever more seniors. And the disintegration of a state-run social security network means many seniors now fear a lonely future.

"I worry when I'm old no one will take care of me," says Wang Jintao. "At that time, I think my life will become very terrible. Our government never worried about that."

Wang is a teacher of the erhu — a traditional two-stringed instrument similar to a violin played balanced on the knee. As he prepares for his weekly class in the park with a group of seniors, he believes he's voicing the fears of an entire generation.

"Thirty years ago, our government made a mistake," he says. "The result is in big cities, most of the people my age, they're worried about their future."

China is now galloping towards its aging future. Experts are warning the danger is not in changing the one-child policy too soon — it's in moving too late.

Diary 04132008

(Carbon Footprint) :

Here's an article about it (in Chinese)

Neon Neon (有我喜歡的 Super furry Animal的性感聲音的主唱!!)
Neon Neon is the artist name for the combined musical powers of Los Angeles based producer Boom Bip and Super Furry Animals main man and solo star Gruff Rhys. Ahead of the duo's pole-position placed debut album Stainless Style comes new offering I Lust U featuring up and coming Welsh starlet Cate Le Bon. The single is an ice cool, 80's inspired lovelorn lament between Gruff and Cate underpinned throughout by Boom Bip's stripped-back and stylish synth-lead production.

Neon neon - I lust u.

what if what if 誰都是自己問題的答案
what if what if 誰都是自己答案的問題

what if what if 誰都是自己問題的答案
what if what if 誰都是自己答案的問題

(how exciting that would be!!)

iam the second one :0)

Ready???

(C'est moi! :p)

Something about liqueurs...

I found this randomly online, but it's good to know more about liqueurs I guess.
The last one "southerner comfort" seems like a good one to try out next time! ;)

Original source:http://www.chineseypage.com/rest/topic/Liqueurs.htm

Kahlua

Baileys

Grand Marnier

Margarita、Side Car、White Lady、Between the Sheets、B52、Mai Tai、Angel Kiss等都少不了柑橘甜酒。

Southern Comfort

Single?

Single de meiyou, single my ass.

I'm f*cking tired of this word / world of being single.

What so wrong about being single?
Is it the new label of someone being emotionally "disabled"?

Then why are people so desperate about not being alone?

Or at least, what the f*ck, man. Melody. What on earth you wake up early in the morning and typing urself this note for.

You pathetic animal.

I got this link from my mom this afternoon, and was just really touched by it and immediately shared it with lots of my friends. In the comments column, I replied to a guy with following comment, "我同意Siderock0319的講法. "

I think I might still need to polish over this paragraph again n again. Cuz I think it said something that I want to express but still it's not done in a very explicit way. Anyway, feel free to drop in your comments as well. Your thoughts are definitely highly appreciated here.

A friend of mine gave a very explicit talk of the general political view from the two main parties in Taiwan, among the polars of "Sustain stability of a society", "Democracy" and "Independence".

And during his presentation, he asked us, 你會怎麼回答 "你是中國人嗎?" or "你是台灣人嗎?"
He even went further explaining that, " of course, your answer would change according to the counterpart you're speaking to...." but still, how and when??

I got a bit emotional while I was trying to reply to his question after class, especially after I had immersed myself in the thought of pondering over these two questions.

I almost cried out for that. I felt my heart ached when I was repeating those words to him. How sad it is for a country without recognition, to be alienated by the invisible, unspeakable (or unspoken) dark but yet strong and determined alliance.

It's cellophanfying.

My R.O.C. might end up like the Gregory in Metaphorsis. Dwindling in the most insignificant way.

(to be continued...)

It's actually the same meaning with wandering around on the internet.
A friend was joking now that he's favorite is actually his laptop, cuz it's the only thing that would not leave him, hate him or abandon him.

In fact, I hate sitting in front of computer.
I rather go out n do something, either walking, reading, exercising or just mingling with friends.

Sometimes I don't know what to do in front of my computer.
There's either too many things needed to be done, or just so empty that I would want to escape from it.

I hate the fact that we are letting a machine taking such a great role in our life that it could easily manipulate our emotions, reactions and in such a massive way.

A good thought provoking ad

Hello, My name is Amy Walker...

An interesting link I got from Eno tonight.

http://www.neatorama.com/2008/03/02/21-accents/#comments

For a period of time that my ear-phone didn't work it that well, so I basically were just staring at her mouth and her big white teeth. Unfortunately I can't say it's charming in return.

However, it was indeed another impressive performance; nonetheless, it shows again how stereotype can be formed so easily. But I will still give her kudos on imitating few really distinctive parts!!

What accents can u catch then?

I guess I sort of getting the one from Calif. (even though not quite sure of the southerner part), the Brooklyn one might be a little bit off, but u know, I guess you can still kinda guess.
I agree with few comments from the same site that some parts of them sounds quite the same.
The German and the Czech part is not too bad, at least I think she manages to capture few essences of the language features. She can't be a parisian, but she can barely pronounce the word "Paris" right.

Final guess? where is she from?? ;)

It is convenient for me to say that "I'm a Taiwanese" but the historical background that I can't separate and I would not deny is that "I'm indeed a Chinese" as well.

(will go back to this topic over and over again. WISH there will be a day when my country can be legally recognized by the people all over the world.)
God bless Kosovo, and God bless Republic of China a Taiwan.

Anyway you got the point.

Because the things I’ve been hearing every day are stored in my “heart”
I became an adult with absolutely no idea at all what I was doing

Happiness blessed with the sun’s fortune poured into my cheeks
Staring straight ahead at the moment your gender is set
Taking your hand only to touch it – a farewell to the me who realized and worried

I’m letting myself be spoiled for once, since I don’t want to lose anyone again
I want to quietly find out the answers I seek, but
escaping to physical intimacy is forbidden; I get thrown off as things are changing

I want to be able to bear not scorning today the shyness I was born with
Because I’ve drowned countless times in choosing to swim

While being tortured into an evening agony, I wake up
Feeling like I can do whatever I want, I go on tearing off everything
Seeing right through a new meeting, we face each other here and you recognize me

I want to comply with accepting today my tarnished shyness
Because I’ve fallen countless times in choosing to live

Akigase Park after even the clouds have run far away from it,
that’s the harsh winter I sing of with absolutely no idea at all

Because the things I’ve been hearing every day are stored in my “heart”
I became an adult with absolutely no idea at all what I was doing

"yeah, f*ck yeah, I'm a Chinese!, why am I using plates instead?"

Hey, I think I do see myself a lot in it. But I guess I was only trying to rationalize my irrational behavior. Oh, god, how I abhor myself sometimes.

(Symptom 1 : yes, bingo. ha)

I think that this made me seems to be a total fool. and yes indeed I am. (or help me to let me say I was.)

Bingo all the times, tragedy)

"Make You Feel My Love" Lyrics

It's really so f#$king simple. But sometimes it just so hard to make someone believes.
Not to mention yourself, gal.

you pseudo-optimist pessimist.

Thanks Des for sharing. Even though when I typed my note to Des, I really want to shout it out loud instead.

Thx, Joe!

I never know that a little trip to Target could actually make one's day. Well, at least it made mine. It was all becuz of “Joe". Joe is a person who currently works there, and one best thing about him is that, he's passionate to help people. Even with his mere disability plus his recent injuries (a stupid blondie nearly ran over him with her truck 5:30 am on the Valentine's day), but it seems to him is like, "it's all good". He's still there, you know, helping people out, with his bright n sincere smile.

I was a bit upset by the fact while I told the other customer that if he wanted to talk to Joe, he would have to write it on the paper to communicate with him. And plus the way how he talks is more like giving out an command with a condescending tone rather than a customer who's needing for help. (ehh....who wants to help you either way...) I just hope that Joe didn't hear and feel what he said.

I was even more touched by the fact that when I heard/saw he wrote, "You seems to be nice"

But then he started writing that he wants to ask me to go out to have a coffee with him sometime....then my alarm radar finally pops out....course I said no...but you know, it's still good to know a friend. So accepted, he teased me by writing, "shy?", I could only shy away by nodding and laughing. ha, lamb.

Thanks for having people like them to remind me that how much I have and how lucky I am.

**Something I read today is really good. It said that "love" is not just merely a feeling but a verb. It needs action. And I think Joe is totally practicing that with his life right now! :)
